Great Finds from bookbook

Went to a bookstore today and bought 3 books. Topics: travel, food and sex. Hey, you love what you love.

I tweeted that on Saturday evening.

It felt good to be in a bookstore, to see the covers, to read the blurbs, to flip through the pages. I was at bookbook on Bleecker. These are the 3 titles I walked away with.

Smile When You're Lying: Confessions of a rogue travel writer by Chuck Thompson

The Nasty Bits: Collected Varietal Cuts, Usable Trim, Scraps, and Bones by Anthony Bourdain

Bonk: The curious coupling of science and sex by Mary Roach

I started reading Smile While You're Lying one on the subway ride home. I already enjoy his style of writing. It's a shame the travel magazines didn't hold on to him. There's something about the male 1st person that draws me in -- they write with a no-holds barred candor that I haven't come across often from women writers.

Before I could answer, she shoved a creased plastic Polaroid into my hand. It was her all right. Only in the photo she was sitting on a chair. Naked. Not just naked. Leaning back on the chair, legs open, waiting-for-the-Miranda-Rights-spread-eagle naked.
The pose was intended to accentuate the usual feminine attributes, but time had not been a friend. A pair of mournful breasts wandered across her belly, putting one in mind of National Geographic. Or a lactating goat. Only by the fat, dark nose cones on the ends was it possible to determine where precisely the crenellated zeppelins ended.

Chapter 1, 2nd and 3rd paragraph, Smile While You're Lying, Chuck Thompson

Perhaps men are more likely to put themselves in the situations to have those adventures to recount. Who knows? But so far all's I know is Smile When You're Lying ain't not bad. Thank you, Bart.

Took me a while to warm up to Anthony Bourdain. The first episode I watched of No Reservations didn't win me over at all. Found it too dry and "slow". But I expect to be sucked into the tales of The Nasty Bits. I've come to realize Mr. Bourdain and I have similar taste buds and he's won me over through The Layover and repeats of No Reservations. Just as I'm getting into it, the final season premieres this September. Tardy for the party, Abigail. What made me think I wouldn't enjoy a show about exploring new lands via food and hard booze led by locals?

Can a person think herself to orgasm? Yes, I said out loud. I'd actually done so that morning while meditating. I nodded while I continued to read the blurb on the back of Bonk: The curious coupling of science and sex. I skimmed over questions about post-mortem erections, vaginal O's, Viagra and pandas. Bonk is going to be a fun read I'm sure. It's always refreshing to see new studies being performed related to sex and sexuality. So many of the long antiquated ideals need to be debunked so we all can enjoy boinking. Will I consider, yet again, going back to school for a degree in Human Sexuality and Psychology?
