On May 16, Speed Rack USA held the finals of the women's bartending competition in New York. It was a fundraising event with 100% of the proceeds going to breast cancer research and education. My good friend, Glendaliz Camacho works for SHARE, a beneficiary of the funds raised at the event.
It was a festive atmosphere at Element that night. I brought with me "Mr. Singapore" (it was his last night in New York, the day after his birthday). He's added to the list of wonderful people I've met through my service, Native Creative Concierge.

Speed Rack USA is definitely the big leagues of women bartending and the event had a big game feel. We didn't get to taste any of the drinks the competitors made but we drank. Don't be fooled. There were stations sponsored by major brands -- Absolut, Beefeater, St. Germain, Campari, Del Maguey -- I list those because those are the sponsors I remember drinking. I saw people drinking Perrier, but I didn't touch agua at all that evening.

Liz Pearce (Chicago) and Victoria George (San Francisco) had huge cheering sections but none bigger or louder than New York's own Eryn Reece who won Speed Rack USA.

Despite the heaviness of the reason we were there, everyone had a great time at Speed Rack USA. And thanks to the rack of tickets Mr. Singapore bought (as many tickets as can fit around a woman's rack) I won the last raffle prize of the evening, a bottle of Moonshine, cocktail bitters and Peach Brandy from Dutch's Spirits (NY). Many thanks to the security guard at Katz's Deli for providing me with a plastic bag to haul my hooch home.

Did I have a great time? Yes. I'm a big time supporter of women and booze for boobs! (Along with diet and exercise).
Every month should be designated breast cancer awareness month...at least in your own life. This event took place right on the heels of Angelina Jolie revealing she elected to have a preventive double mastectomy to reduce her chance of developing the disease. Years ago I wrote an article on the topic, Elective Surgery Cuts Risk of Cancer, special to amNewYork. My first mammogram revealed normal breast tissue. My intention is that all of my subsequent mammograms will be free of cancer too.
